How To Update XP And Vista

Let me guess. You must be thinking why you require to update your Windows software when you have purchased the whole software itself. If you compare it to purchasing a car where after a few days you are required to visit the showroom to add the lock of left door and then again to fix the horn , it can become quite irksome. But software are not made like cars. You can and do add stuff as you go along and users give their feedback. And that’s why computers crash often and cars don’t . I therefore recommend you to update your Windows software
To tell the truth, hackers can always find a way to enter your PC and steal some important information without you knowing about it. Now we are entering some really scary scenarios. What if someone steals your credit card data? To Update your Windows software makes better sense now, isn’t it? Microsoft brings out small bits of software which are called patches to address security loopholes. They are created as and when a problem is noticed (what the nerds call security breeches or vulnerabilities).
Microsoft has made things easy for you. You don’t have to search and find your way to update your Windows software . It can be done automatically. But for some unknown reason , the firm which installed Windows could have switched off automatic updates. In that case you have to update your Windows by switching on this option again. For Windows XP , you have to log on as an administrator . In case you are in a network , it may be necessary to take care of some more precautions .
To update Windows click on start and on the run command ,type , sysdm.cpl and OK .
You will be presented with a menu. The three options are :
1.Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them
2.Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them
3.Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them

For newbie’s the first option is obviously the best . There may be situations where you may like to view what is being added to the operating system . Sometimes in remote PC’s , automatic downloads may themselves create problems. In such situations , the other options can be selected.
One final word here. You need SP2 and if you haven’t got it installed then you must do that now. This I important for the security of your PC.
